Google Lab -- 2/14

A. I searched for Oliver Twist.

B. Without leaving the results page, the first four search results showed me that the book is a work of fiction written by Charles Dickens in 1838. There are 119 pages in the 1966 reprint listed by Google Books, and there are also two well-known movie adaptations. Then I found the websites for the Norwalk Public Library and the Ferguson Public Library (in Stamford). Both have copies of Oliver Twist available.

C. When I clicked on the link to Google Books, it led me to a full-text version of Oliver Twist. I could purchase the book from this website; I could also purchase it on various other websites, such as Amazon or Barnes and Noble.

D. I searched Google Scholar for “public libraries.” The results page allowed me to search results by date and category. The first article that came up when I sorted results by “since 2009” and “articles and patents” was “Public Libraries and the Internet: Issues, Implications, and Challenges” by Bertot et. al. It was published in First Monday, Volume 14, Number 11, in November 2009.
a. First Monday is a peer-reviewed electronic journal. While electronic journals are thought to be less credible than print journals for various reasons, I chose to cite this article because the journal was peer reviewed and because the article’s sources included established journals such as the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science and Information Technology and Libraries.
Furthermore, when I “googled” the author, John Carlos Bertot, I found out that he is a professor in the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, as well as the director of UM’s Center for Library and Information Innovation. He is widely published and also edits two information science periodicals.

E. I used Google Images to find a picture of Chukky Okobi, who plays for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

F. Yale’s Child Study Center web page offers information about Asperger’s syndrome. The link is http://childstudycenter.yale.edu/autism/aspergers.html.

G. McCook, Kathleen de la Pena, and Paula Geist. “Diversity Deferred: Where are the Minority Librarians?” Library Journal: Vol. 118, Number18. 35-38. Nov 1 1993. I was not able to access the full text of this article from the website, but there was a “Find in a Library” link. A search page came up; I entered my zip code, and the closest copy of this article is 7 miles away at the Jeremy Rich Library in Stamford, on the UCONN campus.

H. I cut and pasted the phrase into Google’s search field. The first three results that came up were links to this assignment. However, the fourth link was to Ancestory.com. The phrase in question was part of a passage on John Quincy Adams.
